Chicken Day 2020!

Chickies! Videography by The Peanut

It ain’t no spring chicken… except when it is. 40 day-old New Hampshire Reds came home to the farm this week — we’ll keep 15 hens and a couple of roosters, with the rest destined for freezer camp.

This one is trying to tell me he (she?) doesn’t like Irish dance music, but I am not listening.

In past years we’ve done a combination of hybrid flocks — layers & grazers in 2018 and then just grazers in 2019 (since the laying flock, the Bernices, were still going strong).

This year we’re going to keep a couple of roosters around and try to hatch our own chicks so we switched to this readily available heritage breed. It’s a while before we really have to decide but….incubate or let them sit? Opinions?
